View of New York City from Weehawken, Rare Hand-Colored 1834 Aquatint Print

About the Item

Title: View of New York City from Weehawken, Rare Hand-Colored 1834 Aquatint Print Description: This exquisite hand-colored aquatint and engraving, titled "Vue de New York: Prise de Weahawk," presents a captivating view of New York City and its harbor as seen from Weehawken, New Jersey, around 1834. Based on original artwork by Ambroise-Louis Garneray, this scene reflects the city’s vibrant growth during the early 19th century. The composition is masterfully balanced, with a majestic tree framing the pastoral foreground where elegantly dressed figures picnic, stroll, and enjoy the breathtaking vista. Beyond the river, the skyline is marked by church spires and the prominent dome of the Merchants' Exchange, which existed before the devastating fires of the mid-1830s. The Hudson River teems with ships, highlighting New York's importance as a bustling port. The aquatint technique, combined with engraving, produces rich textures and fine details, further enhanced by delicate hand coloring. This rare print represents both a historical document and a work of art, celebrating the city’s dynamic evolution and its picturesque surroundings. Collectors and enthusiasts alike will appreciate its rarity, artistry, and historical significance. About the Artist: Ambroise-Louis Garneray (1783–1857) was a renowned French painter, engraver, and writer, celebrated for his maritime and landscape works. The son of Jean-François Garneray, a painter for the French king, Ambroise-Louis inherited a rich artistic legacy. His adventurous life significantly influenced his art. Joining the French Navy as a teenager, Garneray experienced years of travel, naval battles, and even imprisonment in England during the Napoleonic Wars. After leaving the Navy in 1814, Garneray became an official painter for the French Navy, where he continued the tradition of celebrated maritime artists like Claude Joseph Vernet. His works often depict coastal scenes and harbors with remarkable accuracy and artistic detail. Garneray is also credited as one of the innovators of the aquatint process, a technique he used to create vibrant, detailed prints such as this one. His output included oil paintings, engravings, and watercolors, often inspired by his experiences and travels. Among his notable achievements are 64 views of French harbors and 40 views of foreign harbors, including this rare and elegant depiction of New York City. Garneray’s works are highly prized for their historical and artistic value, blending technical precision with a romantic vision of the world’s great cities and seascapes. Nowadays 'Weahawk', or Weehawken, New Jersey, offers several notable attractions: - Hamilton Park: This historic site is renowned as the location of the 1804 duel between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. Today, it provides visitors with panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline. - Boulevard East: scenic thoroughfare offering sweeping vistas of the Hudson River and Manhattan. It's a popular spot for leisurely walks and photography. - Port Imperial: This area serves as a major transportation hub with ferry services to Manhattan. It also features dining and recreational options along the waterfront. - Hudson Riverfront 9/11 Memorial: located along the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway, this memorial honors the victims of the September 11 attacks and the maritime evacuation that took place that day. It features two trident-shaped beams recovered from the World Trade Center. These sites highlight Weehawken's rich history and its continued significance as a place of reflection and scenic beauty. Condition: In good condition with some light foxing and mild age-related toning, typical for its age. This print shows signs of previous framing, with some browning along the outer borders. However, once reframed, it will present beautifully, highlighting its timeless charm and vibrant hand coloring. Tips for Matting and Framing: Use a cream archival mat to harmonize with the print's soft tones. A gold or dark wood frame adds elegance, while UV-protective glass helps preserve its vivid hand coloring and delicate details.
