About the Item

Antique Botanical Print – Yellow Spotted Orchid Odontoglossum Excellens Description: A refined and beautifully composed botanical lithograph of Odontoglossum Excellens, a captivating and vividly colored orchid species from the landmark Victorian work Reichenbachia: Orchids Illustrated and Described (1888–1894). This elegant antique print showcases the long, arching inflorescence of a tropical orchid, adorned with a delicate cascade of golden yellow blossoms marked by rich maroon blotches and intricate white accents. Native to the cloud forests of the Andes, species of the *Odontoglossum* genus are celebrated for their vibrant patterns and profuse flowering habits. This lithograph presents a mature orchid plant with plump pseudobulbs and elongated, strap-like green leaves. The flowering stem rises and bends gracefully to the right, supporting a full cluster of blossoms that curve in rhythmic succession across the image. Each flower is precisely rendered, with careful attention to the textures of the petals and the variation in color across the blooms. Drawn from life by Henry Moon (1857–1905), one of the principal artists of the Reichenbachia project, the image bears his signature in the lower left. It was printed by Joseph Mansell of London using the chromolithographic technique, which allowed for richly layered color and botanical fidelity. Commissioned by Henry Frederick Conrad Sander—one of the most prominent orchid collectors and horticultural publishers of the era—*Reichenbachia* set new standards in the marriage of botanical science and fine art. This particular plate exemplifies the artistry and accuracy that makes Reichenbachia such a treasured series among collectors of orchidiana, botanical prints, and 19th-century natural history art. The dramatic coloration and curved layout of the floral stem make it especially striking as a decorative piece. Condition report: Very good condition. Minor age toning at edges and faint foxing to outer margin. Colors remain strong and clean. No tears or repairs. Blank verso. Framing tips: A wide ivory or light grey mat will draw attention to the arched floral spray. Pair with a classic gold, dark walnut, or ebonized wood frame to highlight the print's warm tones and historical charm. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: Joseph Mansell after Henry Moon, London, c.1888–1894
