About the Item

Pierre Chapo 'B17' Handcrafted Elm Shelf for Chapo Création. Pierre Chapo was one of France’s most celebrated modern woodworkers and furniture designers. His sculptural and organic forms combine French modernist refinement with a traditional emphasis on craftsmanship. Today his made-to-order solid wood furniture continues to be handcrafted in France at the Chapo Création workshop run by Zoran Chapo, who embraces his grandfather's commitment to simplicity, sustainability, sincerity and creation. First presented in 1967 at the Salon des Arts Ménagers, the 'B17' surprises with its discretion and elegance, courtesy of the harmony displayed between the lines of the shelves and vertical upright supports. While the vertical posts can rest on the ground, a wall mounting is possible as well. Due to Chapo's design of the support fitting into the vertical upright, the shelf becomes solidly fixed under its own weight. In a balance between gravity and force, the more weight placed on the shelf, the better seated its components become in the vertical upright. Executed in either elm or oak wood and finished in a simple and natural oil of linseed and turpentine. This listing is for our showroom model B17 shelf in elm, in stock at our Los Angeles location and available for immediate shipment. A made-to-order oak version is also available upon request, subject to extended lead times and additional shipping charges from France. All sales are final.

Pierre Chapo, "B17 LONGUE" Bookshelf, circa 1967
By Pierre Chapo
Located in New York, NY
"B17 Longue" bookshelf by Pierre Chapo, circa 1967, in elmwood. Beautiful example of the timeless design mastery of Pierre Chapo (1927 - 1986). In 1967, Pierre Chapo presented new creations at the Salon des Arts Ménagers, exhibiting the B17 bookshelf for the first time. The B 17 is fixed to the wall, freeing up considerable floor space. The bookshelf, whose presence surprises by its discretion and elegance, comes in several versions of differing lengths and heights. The harmony of the lines between the uprights and the shelves (in 50 mm sections) is accentuated by the originality of the support system. Supports, as their name implies, normally prop up the shelves of a piece of furniture or else the jutting parts of buildings. Pierre Chapo decided not to take this universal law into account and modeled a support that fits into the upright, which means the shelf can be solidly fixed under its support. In a balance between gravity and the forces at play, the more weight goes on the shelf, the better its components slot into the upright. Literature: Magen H...
