About the Item

A stately Swiss ‘Black Forest’ wall-mounted walking stick stand dated to the mid-20th century is presented together with six walking sticks, and a Swiss 'Black Forest' carved wood and antler-mounted hanging coat rack. The carved wood decorations on these objects depict some of the most highly sought after Alpine style animals such as boars, stags and dogs; items of the hunt including bugles and daggers; and scrolled foliate decoration including oak leaves and acorns. The wood carving industry of Switzerland began in the town of Brienz in the 1800s where these carvings became a symbol of wealth and affluence. Intricately-carved benches, tables, and table wares found their way into the homes of many elite and knowledgeable connoisseurs around the world. Spotlighted in the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia as well as the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, Black Forest became a world-renowned collector's category that still holds prominence today. During the Victorian Era, the popularity of depictions of wildlife in interior design grew rapidly as Black Forest wares became highly sought after in affluent homes. One of the most common examples of this desire for naturalistic decoration is the recurring inclusion of antler trophy mounts on the walls of sumptuous homes. When installed in large groups, these mounts create a striking visual that evokes the atmosphere of a Swiss chalet. Property from an East Coast Collector. With general overall marks, nicks, surface scratches, tiny losses and repairs consistent with age and use. Some signs of cracks to the antlers, as to be expected.
