17th Century Altar Cloth Fragments Framed in a bois dore frame with green behind glass Made of hand woven silk Metallic thread embroidered Depicting Cornucopia also known as the Horn of plenty. A scrolling grapevine, a lotus and other flowers sprouts rom a horn The metallic threads has a very special effect when it is illuminated. The frame can be hung vertically and horizontally, both is possible. A piece unique dated back 17th century fully hand crafted textile art Origin: Netherlands Condition: good 17th century as might expected it contain some stains see pictures Hight 43.3in - 110cm Width 15in - 38cm Depth 1.6in - 4cm Cornucopia This legendary object, which as the name suggests, bestowed abundance and originated in Greek mythology. According to myth, the Cornucopia is the horn of the goat Amalthea, which Zeus suckled in Crete. In gratitude, Zeus placed her in the sky as a constellation and her horn granted its holder everything she or he desired. the Romans mainly associated the Cornucopia with their goddess Fortuna, but the goddesses Spes (Hope) and Concordia were also often depicted with the Cornucopia.
