About the Item

Woven in Aubusson, France circa 1760, this exquisite square tapestry depicts a charming rural scene inspired by the designs of Jean-Baptiste Huet (1745–1811). The composition illustrates a group of five boys engaged in the lively French children’s game “Le Cheval Fondu” (“The Melted Horse”), in which one player stoops to form a “horse” while others leap over his back in turn. Set against a bucolic countryside backdrop, the tableau features a stone farmhouse with a mother watching from her doorway, a wooden bridge with a fisherman, a distant church steeple, and lush trees rendered in soft hues of blue, beige, and green. This pastoral composition belongs to Huet’s celebrated series Les Amusements Champêtres (“Pastoral Amusements”), itself inspired by the earlier Amusements Champêtres created by Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686–1755) for the Royal Beauvais Manufactory in 1731. Huet, working in the latter half of the 18th century, adapted and enriched Oudry’s original designs for the Aubusson workshops, infusing them with a more rustic charm and a sense of intimate daily life. Executed with exceptional detail and color harmony, this tapestry showcases the artistry of Aubusson weaving at its height. It remains in excellent condition with vivid coloration and crisp outlines, framed by a narrow red and blue border.
