About the Item

-Beauvais Tapestry, Designed after Jean Berain -18th Century -81 x 182 cm, 32 x 72 in -Provenance, from a private French collection This tapestry comes from the so-called “Grotesques” hanging which was woven at the Beauvais factory under the direction of Philippe de Béhagle from the end of the 17th century and in the first third of the 18th century. The style is directly inspired by the compositions of the ornamentalist Jean Bérain but the cartoons must be attributed to Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer as suggested by C. Bremer-David in “French Tapestries and Textiles in the J. Paul Getty Museum”, Los Angeles , 1975, p.75 when she quotes a letter of December 7, 1695 where “grostesque which is sold in tapestry … is from the drawing of Baptiste, excellent painter and designer of icy ornaments”. The hanging, mainly composed of six tapestries (The Elephant, the Dromedary, the Offering to Bacchus, the Offering to Pan and the Musicians) could be adapted at will with main compositions of figures and characters represented under porticoes. In 1710, a list drawn up at the Manufacture mentions eight different cartoons for the compositions of Grotesques - they could've been woven with different borders or simply without to be inserted into a woodwork frame.

19th Century - French Restoration Period - Handwoven Antique Aubusson Rug
By Aubusson Manufacture
Located in New York, NY
-French restoration period handwoven antique Aubusson rug, -circa 1830 -wool -290 x 240 cm / 9.5 x 7.87 ft At Boccara Gallery, we have an important collection of Aubusson rugs from the 18th-20th century. The style developed in Aubusson is recognized today as one of the most influential of the European rug and tapestries History. Workshops to produce Aubusson flat-woven rugs were established under the royal warrant in 1743 to manufacture pile carpets primarily for the nobility. Many weavers who settled in France were Huguenots who had fled Spain during the Inquisition in the early 16th century. By issuing the edict of Nantes, Henry IV granted all non-Catholics freedom of worship, thereby protecting the carpet weavers in Aubusson. Aubusson weavers became the finest craftsmen in the world. Louis XIV’s influential Prime Minister Colbert established the long and hard...

Warp: linen, natural, beige, Z-2-S, 25/in Weft: silk, Z-2, 90 wefts/in², or Wool, Z-2-S, plain tan edge and various small details No marks of origin Subject: This panel is the first of a series of four depicting classical allegories of The Elements (Air, Earth, Water, Fire). Francois Boucher created the original paintings around 1770 and the first edition of the set was woven between 1772 and 1776. “Air” was the first woven and was 3.0m x 1.85m, a taller and narrower format than our example. The figures are: male, Cephalus, dressed as a hunter; female, Aurora; and Cupid (Eros), all within a tall, airy pavilion supported by four thin colonettes and topped by a garlanded baldachin. The figures rest on a garden seat and there are trees and flowers in the background. A dog chases some birds in the foreground. In the other tapestries in the series, there are similar male/female pairings (Vertumnus and Pomona for Earth, Neptune and Amymone for Water, and Venus and Vulcan for fire). Remarks: 1. The series was copied several times between 1894 and 1897 from the original cartoons...
