19th Century Early Victorian Framed Needlepoint "Boy With Pet Lamb" Circa 1840

About the Item

Lovely subject matter to this authentic early Victorian needlepoint tapestry featuring a young boy with long blond hair wearing traditional early Victorian clothing and seated in a pastoral tan and beige colored field with his pet baby lamb; surrounded by a pale blue background. Needlepoint is in excellent and all original condition; there is no fading and there are no repairs; mounted under glass in a bold, solid oak 3" Victorian period frame; the frame is in very good condition with original finish and some some minor scratches. Needlepoint stitchery can be observed from the rear (see image) of tapestry, mounted on original interior period frame boards. This circa 1840 tapestry, was more than likely, stitched provincially and reflects a local British countryside scene. I have had the needlepoint out of the frame and thoroughly examined it and believe that it very well could be earlier than what I have stated (note images of needlepoint stretched over the frame and the backside). It has been professionally remounted with preservation backing and frontal protective glass (see last image of backing). Note: If red coloring on the rear of the lamb is perceived to be blood, then "little boy and lamb" theme takes on possible religious connotation; Passover for Jews; atonement for Catholics (sacrificial lamb). This was a prolific theme for late 18th and early 19th century art and mores. Dimensions: 14 1/4" x 14 1/4" (needlepoint only) Actual frame is 3" all around Overall: 20" x 20" x 1 3/8" deep Provenance: From my own personal collection of folk art, samplers, and needlepoint.
