American Sampler, Circa 1928 by "Edith E.. Jewett"

About

Charming American Sampler "Wrought by Edith E. Jewett" from "Portland, Oregon" in the year "1928"; obviously a talented young lady who meticulously laid out three versions of the alphabet; one script; one block letters and one lower case. In addition, she has done the numbers one through 10; and she has given us an indication of her rural habitat with depictions of deer, dogs, flowers, trees and a couple of birds on perch; all surrounding her small but stoic border hedge defined house in the center. Done in pleasing complimentary colors of blue, green, orange, and gold on a beige back drop, this cross stitched needlepoint sampler is very well done, clean, and in excellent all original condition with no staining, restoration, tears, or repairs of any kind. Dimensions: 17 1/4" wide x 13 3/4" high (add an inch all around for the ebonized and parcel gilt, glass front frame). Provenance: Edith E. Jewett was born in Michigan in 1890 and migrated west to Portland, Oregon in 1910, marrying Edward Jewett in 1914 at the age of 24. She gave birth at age 32 in 1922 to Jacqueline Jewett in Portland, and undoubtedly made the sampler for the benefit of educating her six year old daughter on the "A,B,C's" and numbers; and created images of her surroundings. Jacqueline Jewett married Russel Heacox in 1944 and died in 1974 in Tiburon, California. Her daughter, who was the last to own the sampler, died in 2005 at Squaw Valley, California which is about when, and nearby where I located the sampler. Note: My genealogical research accompanies the sampler.
