About the Item

One of a pair of Franco-Flemish verdure tapestries from the late 17th century, circa 1690. The tapestry envisions a verdant landscape dense with trees, bushes, flowers, and acanthus plants. This fine hand-woven tapestry utilizes the varying size of its design elements to convey distance and scale within the different areas of the scene. Similarly, novel lighting effects are employed within the weaving to effectively create a sense of dimensionality within the trees and leaves, which is something that was a new artistic breakthrough for that era. The central scene is enclosed within a pair of later narrow monochromatic guard borders. Wool with silk inlay. In remarkable condition for its age and weaving style. This piece was one of several used in Ralph Lauren window displays. Condition: This tapestry is a Franco-Flemish verdure landscape tapestry from the late 17th century, circa 1690. It is a fragment, having lost its original borders, with supplemental borders having been added at a later date. This tapestry may have been reduced from a larger piece. Excellent condition overall. Hanging: The tapestry comes ready for hanging, with linen backing and a strip of hook and loop tape at the top end, which can be connected to the opposite side of the supplied hook and loop tape, which could be tacked to your wall. For those who prefer the use of a tapestry rod, we can add the appropriate size loops to accommodate your needs. Display History: This tapestry was recently used in a prominent Ralph Lauren store as part of their window display, drawing a great deal of attention and rave reviews.
