About the Item

Silk embroidery, mounted on panel. The tapestry belongs to the Meiji period (1868 -1912), which coincides with the reign of Emperor Mutsuhito (known posthumously as Emperor Meiji),and which marks a profound transformation for Japan from an isolated feudal society to a modern industrial and military power. Two Tsuru, or Japanese cranes, are depicted between flowering chrysanthemum plants. Tsuru, in Japanese culture is a symbol of longevity. The tapestry was mounted in frame, with folding of abundant part of the fabric on the back.
