About the Item

Nice original American sampler wrought by "Mary Nelson", circa 1837. The alphabet in capital letters and proverbial A,B,C's appear at the top in brown, each letter separated by a quad leaf. This is followed by the numbers 1 through 5 on line three. Below that is the saying; "How doth the little busy bee improve each shining hour and gather honey all the day from every opening flower" All in green font. Birds and a green floral screen are nicely detailed and appear to each side of the verbiage. Below that, in brown, is a castle like structure with turrets and made of bricks or stone, perhaps a fort nearby or the village school, along with pine trees and a dog to each side both enriching the landscape and maybe portraying a pet dog; some symbols appear over the castle. A nicely stitched bold green border bottoms out the scene. The entire sampler is bordered by an intricate pattern of a floral and lace design; simply a beautiful quality sampler. The sampler is in completely all original very good condition with no staining, no tearing or flaws of any kind. I have left the back side uncovered and, as is, because it showcases, in pencil, the provenance by a likely relative. "About the year 1837, Mary Nelson". Cannot discern the rest. The sampler is mounted behind cardboard in it's original and lovely fruitwood frame, with a narrow gold leaf inset (see image). Dimensions: 12" high x 13" wide actual sampler 15" high x 16" wide (in frame) Note: I am a second generation antiques dealer and have been in business for 50 years; I am also a member of several prestigious antique associations. Thus, I am well qualified to inspect and evaluate the products I offer for sale and I guarantee this to be authentic and as I have described.
