About the Item

This charming 1930s Flemish tapestry captures a tender moment in the Romantic style, as a young couple pauses from tending their flock to share a quiet exchange beneath a grand oak tree. The man extends a single rose—an offering of affection—to his companion, their figures nestled in a serene pastoral landscape. To the left, a mill with a turning waterwheel anchors the scene, while a gentle stream meanders through the center. Two sheep and a loyal dog rest peacefully in a sunlit clearing nearby. Woven in soft, harmonious shades of green, blue, cream, gold, and brown wool, the tapestry glows with warmth and idyllic charm. Flemish tapestries have long been celebrated for their fine weaving and narrative detail, originating in medieval workshops in Belgium and northern France. Historically used to insulate and decorate castle walls, they brought both beauty and warmth to grand interiors—just as this romantic pastoral still does today.

Extremely Rare Early 20th Century Pictorial Chinese Rug
Located in Chicago, IL
An extremely rare early 20th century pictorial Chinese rug depicting Chinese scholar's objects like potted peonies and chrysanthemums, citron (Buddha's Fingers) with a censor, and a peach, all symbols of longevity and prosperity. The border is wonderful, with a wide floral and vine pattern running in a circular fashion around the rug. The rare quality of this rug lies not in the imagery, but in the color. Most Central Asian rugs utilize crimsons, golds, oranges, and natural brown wools, however this example is woven mostly in varying shades of indigo, reminiscent of traditional Chinese blue and white pottery.
