About the Item

''For the enemy pressed upon him with loud and warlike outcries; and charging horse against horse, with their lances, after they had broken and spent these, they fell to it with their swords.'' - Plutarch on the Battle of Granicus A magnificent example of its type, and rare in this large format. This scene depicts Alexander the Great mounted on a white stallion, trampling over a figure with cavalry and soldiers fighting near a river. There is an architectural border with winged cherubic figures and floral garlands on a chestnut outer slip. The ‘Battle of Granicus’ (334 BC) is taken from a series of the ‘History of Alexander’ and depicts Alexander’s army crossing the River Granicus to invade Asia Minor. The ‘Alexander’ series was originally designed by Charles le Brun between 1660 and 1673 for Louis XIV, and reproduced as tapestries both at the well-known Gobelins workshop in Paris, and later by the Belgian masterweaver, Judocus de Vos. The tapestries were designed to flatter the king by comparing his virtues and achievements to those of Alexander the Great, and other pieces from the same series can be spotted at the Louvre, the Palace of Versailles, Hampton Court Palace, and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The word tapestry derives from Old French 'tapisserie', from 'tapisser', meaning 'to cover with heavy fabric, to carpet.' Tapestries were ubiquitous in the castles and churches of the late medieval and Renaissance eras. Practically, they provided a form of insulation and decoration that could be easily transported, and until the 19th Century, widely dominated as the most prestigious of all the decorative arts among the European aristocracy.
