Figurative 3D Wool and Blown Glass Tapestry by Alfhild Külper
About the Item
"Dance Around the Pool of Life" is a tapestry composed of five separate parts by Amsterdam-based Swedish artist Alfhild Külper in a pixelated combination of chocolate brown, peach, purple, and blue. While the work was meant to cascade from the wall the the floor, the work can be hung higher to be fully wall-based. Two figures encircle five, jewel-like pieces of blown glass with silvered backing, done in collaboration with Norwegian glass artist Anna-Linda Gabriel.
The yarn used in each rug is hand-spun and dyed, sourced from the finest producers in India and Nepal. With a combination of traditional tufting techniques and 3D embroidery, the artist transforms this raw material into three-dimensional topographical landscapes. The edges of each piece are hand-surged in coordinating wool and the backs are fully lined in a cotton twill. Brass hanging rings are hand-surged into the backing fabric for hanging the work.
About Alfhild Külper
Swedish artist and designer Alfhild Külper aims to create physical representations of the soft spots in our minds. Using a combination of traditional tufting techniques and 3D embroidery, Külper creates a domestic world of fuzzy furnishings imbued with personal memories and spirituality. A graduate of the prestigious Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, she spent ten years as head of design at the avant garde fashion house Viktor & Rolf. Using a mix of traditional tufting techniques with 3D embroidery, Külper crafts landscapes and figures from leftover wool from the textile industries of India, Nepal and the Netherlands that serve as abstract representations of memory and emotion, typically of feelings of joy. The artist has shown at The Cristel Ballroom Gallery (Amsterdam, the Netherlands), De School (Amsterdam, the Netherlands), Lise Braun Galerie (St. Tropez, France), and Transnatural Gallery (Amsterdam, the Netherlands). Her work has been published in Financial Times, The Sunday Times, Surface, Wired, and others.
