It is a typical Flemish tapestry "with large leaves", well preserved, woven with green, yellow and brown yarns whose colors have remained fresh and intense. The market and collectors in recent decades have greatly re-evaluated tapestries with "large leaves", appreciating their high decorative value and ability to blend in with modern furnishings.
Our tapestry belongs to a very particular subcategory of the "feuille de choux". It has large leaves enclosed within a pergola laterally supported by columns surmounted by capitals, with a metal architrave above, enriched by undulating drapes, and with a more or less curvilinear balustrade below, on which it is placed in the center a plinth decorated with masks that supports a vase of flowers. Various animals and birds enrich the scene.
The borders of these tapestries are also extremely characteristic, all decorated, like the one presented here, with the sequence of small blue lozenges on a brown/yellow background. Therefore we has the impression that these tapestries were all produced by the same manufactory and in a not too large span of years, even if the hypotheses that have emerged regarding the location of the original atelier and the chronology of the tapestries are the most varied.
The range of opinions shows the difficulty that even the most expert encounter when faced with works similar to the tapestry presented here, which we think was woven in Oudenaarde, but which it is more prudent to qualify only as Flemish, placing it at a date which should fall no later than distant from 1550.
The tapestries with large leaves were produced between the second quarter of the 16th century and the middle of the following century by all the provincial manufacturers of Flanders (Oudenaarde, Enghien, Grammont, Bruges), but also by the ateliers of the French region of Marche (Aubusson, Felletin). There are very few tapestries of this kind provided with brands and none can be precisely dated. It is therefore an area in which the classifications and also the datings remain largely hypothetical.
