Flemish Historical Tapestry from the 16th/17th Century

About the Item

A stunning late 16th-century Flemish historical tapestry, possibly from Oudenaarde, woven with rich gold, blue, and green threads. The central field possibly depicts the story of Pompey's head being presented to Caesar. The figures are dressed in typical Roman armor: Caesar is seated under a canopy, his army visible in the middle distance, and a green landscape is visible in the distance. The border is filled with contemporary figures and vases with masked lion heads and abundant floral arrangements, all of which correspond to the opposite border. 335x312cm Tapestry weaving is believed to have begun in Oudenaarde during the second half of the 14th century. By the 15th century, it had become one of the most important tapestry centers in Europe. The earliest record of tapestry weaving in Oudenaarde dates from 1368, but it took some time for the trade in these fine pieces to take off. Tapestry production in Oudenaarde reached its peak in the 16th century, when it was produced in large quantities and to a very high quality. On May 16, 1544, Oudenaarde issued Charles V's general ordinance on tapestry weaving. From then on, it became mandatory to weave the town mark and the weaver's label into the border of the tapestry.
