Georgian Silkwork Embroidery Picture of a Ho-ho Bird
About the Item
Georgian Silkwork Embroidery depicting a Ho-ho bird. The embroidery is worked in silk and metal threads on a silk ground. Colours greens, red, pink, gold, copper, brass, silver, blue. Wonderfully worked, in a number of different stitches. The scene depicts a large central Ho-ho bird sitting on a potted flowering plant. (The Ho-ho bird is a mythical, exotic bird, often inspired by Asian art, particularly the Chinese fenghuang or "phoenix." It became popular in the 17th and 18th centuries, especially in Jacobean and crewel embroidery.). The flowers from this plant are fantastical and highly detailed, as is the bird. On the ground below is a country scene with a stag, a dog, a rabbit and flowers. The piece is framed in an old, oval, painted wooden frame with rippled, old glass.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

Large Early 19th Century Painted and Silkwork Picture 'The Good Samaritan'

The picture retains its original gilt frame. The image is rendered in a mixture of silkwork and hand painted decoration and depicts the injured traveler on the roadside being aided by the Samaritan while the Levite and the Priest are seen in the distance. This parable is told by Jesus in the Gospel of Luke.
