About the Item

ANTIQUE FRAMED EDWARDIAN SAMPLER An unusually large-scale and impressive pictorial sampler which depicts a wealth of animals and symbols within a strawberry border. Also, it is unusual to have the Welsh language inscription, which reads ‘Hen le bendigedig yw cartref’, although Google Translate translates this as ‘Home is a wonderful old place’, the most common translation seems to be ‘Home sweet home’, but we have also had an in-person translation to ‘Our home is a splendid place’. The sampler is signed ‘Elizabeth Williams, Age 15’ and dated ‘1905’. Presumably, Elizabeth would have been born around 1890, and one can only imagine her life in Camarthenshire, probably on a farm. You really do get a sense of her personality shining through from the artwork, a love of animals, nature and colour. There are charming depictions of bullfinches, butterflies and mallard ducks surrounding a central cockerel/rooster with a depiction of a church above. Below the signature, there are two sheep flanking a parrot along with flowers and other symbolic motifs, all surrounded by the most wonderful strawberry border. Framed and glazed in its original Edwardian carved oak and parcel gilt frame with egg and dart decoration. The sampler is in great vintage condition. The colours of the wool are all still very vibrant, and it appears to have been kept out of direct sunlight. The frame is also in good vintage order. The only thing I would point out is that there is some discolouration in places on the backing fabric. Approximate overall measurements: 98cm high x 77cm wide x 2cm deep. The visible part of the sampler measures approximately 81cm x 60cm.
