"Little Samuel at Prayer"
The painting "Little Samuel at Prayer" was painted by the renowned English painter Joshua Reynolds in 1777. It was a very popular work at the time and has been reproduced many times.
The story behind this painting is linked to the biblical account of young Samuel. According to the Old Testament, Samuel was a major prophet. From an early age, he was entrusted by his mother, Hannah, to the high priest Eli to serve God at the sanctuary of Shiloh. Reynolds's painting captures a key moment in Samuel's childhood: when he is called by God while he sleeps, and he responds, initially believing it is Eli calling him.
Joshua Reynolds, as President of the Royal Academy and a renowned portrait painter, was able to infuse this scene with great emotion and spirituality. The choice to depict Samuel as an innocent and pious child at prayer resonated particularly with the sensibilities of the time, which valued piety and childlike innocence.
The painting is now preserved and exhibited at the Musée Fabre in Montpellier, France, where it is part of the permanent collection. It demonstrates Reynolds' influence on contemporary painting and the popularity of religious themes in art.
