About the Item
Islamic Ottoman Goldwork Embroidered and Appliqué Panel in the Arabesques style
Likely originating in the first half of the 1800's, this textile is constructed from metallic thread: Gold, Platinum, silver, and brocaded silk applied to a silk foundation. Its central motif is a “tree of life,” rendered in multiple tones and textures of Gold, Silver, and Platinum thread and purl work. Leaves and blossoms are formed from assorted brocade silk fragments—each differing in color and pattern—appliquéd onto a cream silk ground. The perimeter is edged with gold thread, and the reverse is lined in pale blue silk.
A comparable example—identical in technique though depicting a different subject—appeared at Sotheby’s in The Halpern Judaica Collection: Tradition and Treasure, Part 1 (December 15, 2022, Lot 85), catalogued as A Highly Important Torah Ark Curtain, Ottoman Empire or Italy, 19th century. Scholarly commentary on that piece attributes it to either Turkey or Italy, and the catalogue notes that it reflects “striking evidence of the mutual influences and close connections between the Jewish communities of Italy and the Ottoman Empire fostered by continuous mercantile activity.”
As early as the 17th century, the East India Company was importing elaborately printed cotton palampores from India’s Coromandel Coast into Europe. These textiles typically depicted a flowering or fruit-bearing tree rising from rocky terrain. This “tree of life” imagery—rooted in Indian, Persian, and Chinese artistic traditions—was swiftly adopted by European consumers, becoming a favored emblem of the globally intertwined textile trade during the age of exploration. It harmonized perfectly with 18th-century Western taste for chinoiserie and exotic ornament.
Beyond Jewish ceremonial textiles, similar panels were also created for Islamic devotional use, often following the same mihrab configuration found in prayer carpets. An example may be seen in Bonhams, London, Islamic and Indian Art, November 12, 2024, Lot 76: An Ottoman silk and metal-thread embroidered mihrab panel.
This particular panel was likely produced for the Western market or by special commission—perhaps intended as a bed cover, or hanging wall decoration. As a translation of a traditional cotton palampore design into silk and goldwork, it stands as a vivid testament to textile history and a unique elevation of a classic motif.
Condition notes: Some minor shattering and fraying to the silk, with evident staining, discoloration, and scattered historical repairs. Nevertheless, the embroidery and metalwork remain in excellent preservation, and the fabrics show minimal fading.
