Robert Bouquillon (1923-2013), the Angel of Music - Aubusson Tapestry - No. 1015

About the Item

Robert Bouquillon was successively a student of the École des beaux-arts de Douai from 1940 to 1942, of the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris from 1943 to 1945 where he was awarded a first prize for drawing, and of the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Montparnasse. Selected twice for the Critics' Prize at the same time as Bernard Buffet, Bernard Lorjou and Serge Poliakoff, he is also a pianist at the L'Écluse cabaret on the Quai des Grands-Augustins in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, accompanying and becoming friends with young artists who were performing there at the time such as Barbara, Catherine Sauvage, Jean-Pierre Darras and Philippe Noiret4. After living at 2, rue Mizon in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, then in Lambres-lez-Douai during his teaching at the Douai School of Fine Arts, he chose in the 1970s to settle in the Gard, first in Collias, then avenue Louis-Alteirac in Uzès. He has long favored in his works representations of the North with the mine, the barges, the canals, the northern beaches, the rain (Les Parapluies), to then paint Étretat, Venice or the Camargue as well as, in a musicalist spirit, Tributes to Mozart, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Duke Ellington. He died, two weeks after his wife Germaine, on February 18, 2013 in Uzès.
