About the Item

"Grand Icone." Tapestry by Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979). Woven by Atelier Pinton Freres, Aubusson, France. 3/6 (woven reverse), circa 1970. Size : 208 cm x 145 cm. Private French collection. Sonia Delaunay was with her husband Robert Delaunay, one of the most precursor artists of their generation. They chose an other way of painting who is called orphisme. In fact at this same period Picasso, Gleize, Gris. they made a cubist art. The Orphism was a completely new way of experimentation of art. "If there are geometric forms, it is because these simple and manageable elements have appeared suitable for the distribution of colors whose relations constitute the real object of our search, but these geometric forms do not characterize our art. The distribution of colors can be effected as well with complex forms, such as flowers, etc. only the handling of these would be a little more delicate." Sonia Delaunay, speaking at the Sorbonne, 1927. On their return to France, the Delaunay found a prominent place in the Paris art scene. Their apartment became the place of any meeting of the international literary and artistic Avant Garde. Poets and painters are everywhere and cover their words and color the living room walls. Parallel research Workshop simultaneous, Sonia Delaunay experimented textile art as an artistic medium. She created several dresses-poems from the verses of poets she likes: Tristan Tzara, Louis Aragon and Philippe Soupault. Summit of fusion between art, life and poetry, these hybrid objects, carried by his friends, allow the artist to explore the plastic properties of the word on the garment, and poets to experiment with textiles as a new medium of poetic investigation.
