About the Item
A rare circa 1960's hand-loomed hanging tapestry, created at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in India by Hablik Handicrafts after a design by Elisabeth Hablik Lindemann.The colors of the woven woolen fibers are vibrant and saturated; the piece displays impeccable modernist aesthetics and superb craftsmanship. It is, in a word, stunning.
This magnificent tapestry adds a wonderful presence to any environment it is placed in, and makes a spirited, yet serene, addition to any room. The back of the textile features a maker’s label and the artists imprimatur is woven into the front lower right of the design.
Abeline Elisabeth Hablik-Lindemann (Germany, 1879 – 1960) was a craftswoman, and master weaver. She trained as a pattern draftsman in Dresden at the private drawing school of the siblings Gertrud and Prof. Erich Kleinhempel, and then in the handicrafts design studio at the Anna Kühn company.
