"Circus Performers, " Brilliant Example of Surrealist Folk Art in Inlaid Wood
About the Item
Brilliantly designed and executed, this example of wood inlay Folk Art, by Renato Maggiora in 1953, depicts a pair of circus acrobats at the centre, highly stylized and showing the influence of Cubism, Surrealism and midcentury abstraction. To the left the artist depicts the audience, and around the figures is a network of ropes and abstract Miro-esque shapes. The panel is executed in walnut and fruitwood, and is signed and dated.
