About the Item
This rare and brilliantly-worked copper panel depicting a half-nude fisherman surrounded by a Middle Eastern townscape, exotic fish and a sailing boat, was created by A.N. Oppenheim, best known for producing high quality Judaica and enameled dishes in the early years of the Israeli nation. A fine example of midcentury artisanry, with touches of late Art Deco, this unique panel consists of heavy copper washed with a silvery-gray patina. Oppenheim was based in Tel Aviv, and was active in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s.

"Hauling the Net, " Rare Art Deco Bronze with Nude Male Fisherman
By Alexandre Ouline
Located in Philadelphia, PA
This powerful bronze -- depicting a nude fisherman hauling in his net -- is a superb example of Art Deco sculpture influenced by Auguste Rodin's emphasis on the emotion and physicality of the human figure. Here, the strength and muscularity of the male figure is shown to great effect, its power belying the sculpture's diminutive size. It was sculpted by Alexandre Ouline, who executed a series of bronzes that depicted male figures performing feats of strength and courage, such as pulling a great weight or steering a ship in a stormy sea. Ouline won First Prize in the Seine et Marne agricultural fair...
