Oval frame with scagliola impressions - late 18th/early 19th century

About the Item

Elegant oval gilded gold-leaf frame, carved and mounted as a vitrine, containing a collection of 31 scagliola casts of neoclassical subjects, dating from the Grand Tour period (late 18th-early 19th century). The impressions, obtained from engravings on hard gems, glass or semiprecious stones, reproduce mythological scenes, portraits, allegorical figures and motifs from classical antiquity, inspired by Roman art. These are casts that were made and collected by educated travelers on the Grand Tour, often given as gifts or kept as mementos of Italian stops, particularly in Rome. The older, red-brown prints (probably in sulfur) are distinguished from the more recent, white or yellow ochre prints in scagliola. The frame, which still retains the original hook, measures 37.5 × 30 cm and is mounted vertically. Stylistically traceable to central Italy, presumably Roman area. Footprint composition: - 4 red casts - 11 yellow casts - 16 white casts Shipping worldwide. Contact Us for more information.
