Petrified Wood Slice from Arizona

About the Item

A large section of a petrified conifer tree trunk, (Araucarioxylon arizonicum) from Northern Arizona, dating to the Triassic period, circa 225 million years ago. Over hundreds of millions of years this Prehistoric tree has been transformed into a dazzling, multi colored stone, streaked with reds, blacks, whites and grays. The remarkable colors are the result of permineralization; a process of fossilization where mineral rich water flows through the plant, depositing these minerals (in this case, mostly carbon, iron oxides and manganese oxides) into the cells of the organism. A highly decorative piece - with bronze plate for wall display.
