"Ringmaster and Ram", Art Deco Circus Theme Inlaid Wood Panel w/ Female Nude
About the Item
This masterwork of inlaid wood -- in stunning, interlocking pieces of burled walnut and maple, mahogany and beech -- depicts a nude female ring master with whip in hand, urging a ram to jump through her ring. The artist was Andrew Szoeke, who was America's greatest practitioner of inlaid wood artistry in the Art Deco period, his only rivals being a group of artists in Sweden. Szoeke, a Hungarian-American artist, is also known for a series of felt applique and wood pieces that featured Zodiac symbols, again drawing from mythological sources. The piece is signed and dated on one edge.
