Extraordinary Granulation in an 1870 Gold Bracelet

About the Item

The gold luminous and warm in color, is 18 kt to 22kt. It's richness brings to mind a discovered treasure in a museum.. Completely covered with granulation of the highest quality, tiny, medium sized, and larger orbs of gold are applied everywhere, even in the seams of the bracelet. Surrounding this extraordinary gold work are swirls of fine gold rope, all hand applied. At the bangle's centre, two square granulated box frames display ancient coins dating to the Classic Roman Period. These are not reproductions but actual ancient coins set in a raised open backed circle of fine gold rope. The brooch, displays another ancient coin set here in the round. It has the same quality gold granulation as does the bracelet. We admire it worn at an angle. Made for a petite wrist that measures under 6 inches around. Size 5 1/2 would be perfect. Superb condition. Granulation in original Etruscan Jewelry consisted of hand formed tiny balls of gold applied to a gold surface without the use of solder. How Etruscan jewelers accomplished this, we do not know. Imagine the process of doing this repetitive work by hand. The world famous Roman jeweler, Fortunato Castellani was an innovator known for reviving the jewelry and techniques of the ancient Etruscans. Fortunato began business in Italy in 1794 and remained head of his firm until 1865. There were few heads of state, from Napoleon III down to Queen Victoria's family, that did not purchase jewels from this firm or from the firms he passed on to his sons. Alessandro Castellani, one son of Fortunato, opened stores in London and Paris in the 1860's. Carlo Guiliano, who became equally known and respected as a gold smith and designer, managed this firm. The firm revived the jewelry and techniques of the ancient Etruscan, Roman and Greek jewelers. They specialized in the finest examples of gold granulation that inspire collectors today.
