19th Century "Secret Lover" Brooch

About the Item

Extraordinarily cool 19th Century "Secret Lover" Brooch with locket fitting. Most likely French in manufacture, this exquisitely crafted brooch is the work of a master jeweler of the period. The detailing is extraordinary and can only be appreciated with the aid of a loupe. A photo or ivory miniature of a loved one (possibly secret) was inserted into the locket from the back. A mechanical fan "opens" with a pull of a tab and remains "open" clutched in the meticulously detailed hand below. If a person wishes to share the contents of the locket, they close the fan. Otherwise all secrets are kept to oneself. This mid 19th Century novelty brooch is made of the highest quality materials and craftsmanship. The spiral frame and fan and hand motif are 14k gold and the interior of the glass locket frame is a rigid, strong alloy metal. The detailing on the hand, cuffs and flowers is extraordinary with the addition of a half pearl and persian turquoise. The fan is vibrantly enameled in periwinkle with black cross hatched designs. If desired, small (non soldered) loops can be added for use as a pendant. 1870's France. Fan Length 2 1/16", Width 1 3/4" Excellent condition.
