This charming De Ambrosi Contemporary Amethyst and Diamond Brooch made in Italy in the Contemporary Era, circa 2010s, makes one think of the refreshing shade under a trellised grape arbor in the heat of August. The pin features three unmistakable grape leaves attached to coiling vines, crafted in 18K white gold and set with round brilliant-cut amethysts and round brilliant-cut white diamonds, weighing approximately 6.00 carats of G-H color and VS clarity. These leaves playfully conjure the fruit of the harvest—rather than the leaf which is typically dark green. Various sizes of purple amethyst rounds suggest the undulation in the leaves, a tender detail which De Ambrosi is known for. De Ambrosi flowers and natural forms have their roots in the flowing, sinuous lines of the Art Nouveau period (1890-1914), but have blossomed into a sophisticated, at times otherworldly style all their own. The Italian jewelry house was established in 1949 by Remo Deambrosi in Valenza, Provincia di Alessandria, Piedmont. The house was highly successful and in just half a century it was renowned for its superior craftsmanship; particularly in lapidary, creating splendid hand-carved cabochon shapes. Their aesthetic seeks to capture light dancing on beautiful gemstones which is achieved beautifully in this keenly observed jeweled brooch. The use of the deep purple, outlined so strikingly with white diamonds that follow every curve, contributes to the ethereal quality of these multiple-lobed leaves. The skillful manner in which the diamonds cling to each coiling vine becomes even more apparent when you see the piece from the reverse side. Not one single diamond is visible from the back. Despite the challenging shape, all face forward to maximize the sparkle. Additionally, there is azuring in the metal behind the gemstones. Azuring is a technique that adds hours to the fabrication, where shaped cutouts are hand-carved behind each stone to allow light in and amplify the sparkle.
