Ambrosi Crystal Tourmaline Diamond Brooch

About the Item

When Ambrosi jewelry pieces move into the realm of the abstract and the avant garde, things start to get exciting. The compositions and materials invite us to look at the world in a new and exciting way. This unusual double pinstem Signed Ambrosi Diamond Tourmaline Paisley Brooch, made in Italy in the Contemporary Era, 2018, features a vertical oval silhouette with a horizontal oval cut-out in the middle, or the other way around. You can wear this 2.13 x 1.5-inch (5.41 x 3.81 cm) brooch vertically or horizontally as you wish, as the form and surface pattern are wholly abstract. Abstract art uses a visual language of shape, form, color, and line to create a composition which can exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. As a way of seeing, it is very freeing. In geometric abstraction, for instance, one is unlikely to find references to naturalistic entities, and given the history of brooches, a classic form that includes the natural world as its subject matter, this piece is most unusual. The brooch is crafted in 18K white and yellow gold and features 2 rock crystals layered with 10 fancy shape tourmalines bezel-set in yellow gold. At either end of the oval cutout, two white gold spheres are set with an estimated 3.12 carats of pavé diamonds of G-H color and VS clarity. The green tourmaline paisleys or commas or apostrophes—call them what you will—dance around the carved and highly smoothed surface of the white rock crystals, creating vibrant movement. The green gemstones are carved with a hash pattern on the surface that adds extra visual interest to the sculptural piece. Green tourmaline is a rare and luminescent coloration for the gemstone, which is most commonly black, but can range from colorless to brown, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, pink, or hues in between. Rock crystal, sometimes referred to as quartz crystal, is pure quartz—a colorless and transparent variety that has been valued for thousands of years. Geologically speaking, pure white rocks are rare. While there are many white minerals, such as quartz, feldspar, and calcite, they don't always assemble themselves into a perfectly white rock such as this. The Italian jewelry house was established in 1949 by Remo Deambrosi in Valenza, Provincia di Alessandria, Piedmont. The house was highly successful and in just half a century it was renowned for its superior craftsmanship; particularly in lapidary, creating splendid hand-carved cabochon shapes. Their aesthetic seeks to capture light dancing on beautiful gemstones which is at times surrealist or iridescent, as exemplified spectacularly in this out-of-this-world abstract contemporary brooch. Retail price is $27,150. Measures approx. 2.25” by 1.5”. 10 fancy shape tourmalines and 2 rock crystals. Diamond weight approx. 3.12 carats total, estimated G-H color and VS clarity. Overall weight approx. 45.35 grams, made in 18k white and yellow gold. Signed Ambrosi; circa 2018. Retail $27,150.
