About the Item

In its original embossed box, this 14k gold circa 1901-1909 brooch/pendant bears the emblem of the Daughters of the American Revolution. A spinning wheel with 13 spokes, representing the 13 original colonies, features "DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION" against blue enamel on the edge of the wheel. Thirteen stars, again referencing the colonies, surround the colonies. a platinum-topped distaff (spindle) filled with flax is in the background of the emblem. According to the DAR, the emblem represents the industry, thrift, and patience" of colonial women and the "industry and unity" of the colonies. The emblem was adopted in 1891. This brooch, worn over the left breast by members, was adopted in 1901. This piece can be worn as a pendant as well thanks to the flip-up bale on the reverse, which allowed Mrs. Anne Cummings Culbertson greater versatility in how she displayed her membership. The reverse of this brooch is engraved with the name of the member, Anne Cummins Culbertson, her number, 76245, and the maker's mark for J. E. Caldwell & Co of Philadelphia, which matches the inside of the box. Mrs. Anne Cummins Culbertson is listed in the 1909 edition of the Lineage Book of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution on page 92 volumes 76-77. She was born in Des Moines, Iowa on November 1, 1881. She was married to Roger Goodwin Culbertson (January 14, 1881-April 28, 1938). She died February 1972. She is buried at the Carroll City Cemetery in Maple River Township, Iowa. Her membership is based on her relation to William Woodworth. She is the Gr-gr-gr-gr-granddaughter of William Woodworth and Mary Lott, married in 1761 William Woodworth (1735-1814) served as lieutenant in 1775 in the Charlotte Precinct, NY. He was born in Plymouth, Connecticut and died in Cambridge, New York. The Daughters of the American Revolution, founded on October 11, 1890, is a nonprofit headquartered in Washington DC and is dedicated to historic preservation and education. The brooch/ pendant measures 1 1/16" wide and 1 1/2" tall. It has a c-clasp with an early safety mechanism and a flip-up bale. It weighs 5.5 grams. There is no enamel loss.
