Antique Etruscan Revival Angel Skin Shell Cameo Medusa Brooch/Pendant, c. 1875

About the Item

Large and Exquisite Etruscan Revival pale pink hand carved conch shell cameo of Medusa, American, 1875. Set in 14K yellow gold with an acid finish or "bloom" so that the gold color is a rich but soft finish (not highly polished) which appears to be a high, 20 or 22, karat gold. This brooch/pendant is a vertical oval (denoting the 2nd half of the 19th century) measures 3-1/16 inches tall, by 2-1/8th inches wide without the 5/8 inch long pendant bale. Though unsigned or hallmarked the craftsmanship associated with the gold work in the Etruscan Revival style is nothing short of exceptional from the stylized wing and snake motifs to the perfectly shaped and spaced tiny spherical gold granulation. And, as for the carving of the pink shell cameo, the delicacy of the hair, the soft curves of the cheek and the neoclassical aquiline features of the serious face of Medusa is purposefully set off by the completely uncarved background. The verso has a gold frame so that it can hold a photograph. In Greek mythology, the gorgons were hideous monster figures who were immortal. However, the most famous of the gorgons was extremely complicated, a human (mortal) and beautiful. Her hideous trait was that her hair was filled with venomous snakes and anyone who gazed at her would be turned to stone. Not only that, but in her death her head was used as an amulet to vanquish evil. In the end, Medusa was complex, misunderstood and hideous; but also, tragic, beautiful, and a shield against evil. This brooch/pendant is accompanied by a 22K gold contemporary chain which is 22 inches long. The chain weighs 15.17 grams. All items sold are accompanied by a detailed appraisal by our gemologist, as well as all original GIA certificates, if specified in listing. As always, we guarantee all of pieces. Each piece of jewelry arrives in a finely gift-wrapped presentation box,
