Antique Fleur-de-Lis Diamond and Onyx Brooch
About the Item
The fleur-de-lys, the lily flower, is known as the symbol of the French royal family. This motif of a stylized three-petaled lily is originally a medieval heraldic symbol, associated with purity, the Virgin Mary and the Holy Trinity.
This antique gold and silver round brooch is made of black onyx and set with rose-cut diamonds in the shape of a fleur-de-lis. The rose-cut diamonds are up to approximately 0.35 carats. The front and pin at the back of the brooch are made of 14 karat gold. The brooch is in very good condition and of high quality. The diameter of the brooch is 2.5 centimeters and weighs 6.9 grams.
Onyx jewelry were mostly worn in The Grand Victorian Era, between ca. 1861-1880. Saddens by the death of the Queen’s husband, Prince Albert, mourning became an art for the Victorians. Who designed black clothes and jewelry to be worn in the months following the death of a relatives. This mourning tradition was adopted in several countries, including the Netherlands.
The brooch will be gift-wrapped in a black and gold jewelry box.
