Antique Victorian Diamond and Onyx Locket Pendant
About the Item
An antique Late Victorian, 1880-1890, diamond and onyx locket pendant. In the center, the onyx stone is decorated with a silver floral decor set with rose cut diamonds. The pendant is oval-shaped and is being held by a 14 karat gold bail. The onyx is intact and all nine rose cut diamonds are original and present. The reverse of the pendant has a glass lid that can be opened, usually holding a memento of a loved one.
Onyx jewelry were mostly worn in The Grand Victorian Era, between ca. 1861-1880. Saddens by the death of the Queen’s husband, Prince Albert, mourning became an art for the Victorians. Who designed black clothes and jewelry to be worn in the months following the death of a relatives. This mourning tradition was adopted in several countries, as well in the Netherlands.
The pendant is in very good condition and of high quality. Marked and tested as 14 karat gold. The length of the pendant is 4.4 cm and weighs 13.5 grams.
