About the Item
A Victorian diamond, yellow gold and silver brooch and pendant, comprising thirty-one old mine cut diamonds, and twelve rose cut diamonds, set in silver, backed in 15 yellow gold, with 15 karat yellow gold pin and fittings.
This stunning Victorian brooch and pendant is designed as a 12-rayed star. The brooch is set to the centre with a large cushion shaped old mine cut diamond. The diamond is bright, white, and sparkly, and is held within a star shaped setting, studded with rose cut diamonds to each point. The 6 longest points of the star branch from this central cluster. Each ray is set with 3 old mine cut diamonds, and one rose cut diamond, graduating in size from the centre. 6 further shorter rays punctuate the space between the larger ones, each set 2 old mine cut diamonds. The diamonds are bright, white, sparkly, and well-matched with one another. A fiery brooch, which is certainly a showpiece. The brooch is complete with a C-shaped catch and pin, as well as a pendant hook, in yellow gold. The brooch is in good condition, with a small, old solder repair to the brooch fitting, and the central diamond has a carbon spot at the centre, though this is well-disguised by the culet. Wear and tear acquiescent with age.
It is likely this brooch would have originally been part of a set of star brooches, which would have had detachable brooch fittings, allowing them to be fastened to a tiara, as well as worn as brooches and pendants. This piece may have also attached to a diamond necklace, as a drop.
