About the Item
A Victorian demantoid garnet and diamond lizard brooch, the writhing lizard encrusted with old brilliant-cut diamonds, estimated to weigh a total of 2.65 carats, silver claw-set to a yellow gold mount, set with a central streak of round-shaped faceted garnets, estimated to weigh a total of 1.50 carats, with garnet eyes, claw-set to a yellow gold mount, all to a detachable yellow gold brooch fitting, circa 1880, measuring approximately 2.9 x 9cm, gross weight 18.8 grams.
This antique brooch is in very good condition for its age. Some of the garnets with signs of abrasion consistent with the age of the piece. Unmarked, tested as 18ct gold and silver, with 14ct gold pin.
An exquisite late Victorian brooch. This piece is in the shape of a realistic lizard, set throughout with scintillating old-cut diamonds and demantoid garnets with a bright lime green hue. The legs and tail of the lizard are wonderfully detailed, and the creature appears to be in mid-motion. During the late Victorian era, jewellery depicting creatures such as insects and reptiles became popular, and this piece is an excellent example of that style. This piece comes from Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales.
Should you choose to make this purchase we would be delighted to send it to you in a Bentley & Skinner handmade leather case packed in a gift-wrapped Bentley & Skinner black and gold presentation box. Shortly afterwards we will send you on a valuation for insurance purposes for your reference and safekeeping.
