About the Item

This magnificent and brilliantly simple silver and onyx brooch was created in the 1950s for the firm for Georg Jensen by Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel. The wife and husband design team created spectacular pieces of furniture including the iconic “Hanging Egg Chair," which you have absolutely seen. Nanna began her career as a cabinet maker (which would help explain the masterful precision of workmanship for which her furniture pieces are appreciated). Jørgen began creating furniture while still a student in Copenhagen. The designers met at a cabinet makers' convention in the mid-1940s and were soon married. Their lifelong partnership resulted in an enormous aesthetic improvement to the world. Case in point: this iconic silver and onyx brooch. The modernist figural brooch depicts a pearl on the half-shell of an oyster. The "shell" is the most beautifully simple windswept piece of silver you will ever hold in your hands. Poised near the "hinge" of the shell is a perfect black "pearl" made from onyx. It's perfection. A sturdy trombone clasp secures the brooch to whatever fabric you choose. This iconic brooch stands out from the pack because of its superlative condition. Silver is a soft metal and this is a heavy brooch: all it would have taken is one drop or one slightly careless toss into the jewelry box or onto the surface of the dresser and a dent or a gouge would have appeared. If you have seen this magnificent brooch, you have no doubt also seen those dents and gouges. The combination of soft silver and a weight amount of it create a sort of "perfect storm" for damage.
