Scottish Brooch Thistle & Citrine Thomas Kerr Ebbutt
About the Item
This midcentury (circa 1970) Scottish brooch features a thistle motif with two shaggy leaves holding up a large (12mm) faceted round citrine gemstone. Citrine is found in limited amounts in the Cairngorm Mountains in Scotland. Thus, Cairngorm citrine is a highly desirable feature for any piece of authentic Scottish jewelry to possess. But unfortunately, most "citrine" found in Scottish jewelry is in fact, glass. But not here. This is a natural citrine gem. What's more, the citrine is securely prong-set in its coronet mounting and has no scratches or abrasions. It has clearly been a little worn and well-cared-for piece.
This brooch was created by Scottish jeweler Thomas Kerr Ebbutt. The piece is fully marked on the interior and these marks tell us that it was made between 1969 and 1975. In addition to the UK marks, the piece features the maker's mark "T.E." and the word, "SCOTLAND."
Gleaming and pristine, the brooch or stick pin could be worn on the lapel of a blazer, or blouse or to close a kilt.
The brooch measures 85mm x 22.35mm.
