Carl Bacher Victorian Egyptian Revival Carnelian Enamel and Diamond Pharaoh Pin
About the Item
During the 19th century, the discoveries of ancient archaeological finds influenced what is referred to as "archaeological revival jewelry," or "Egyptian revival jewelry." The initial Egyptian Revival period flourished from the 1820s onward, and was inspired by ancient Egyptian imagery, such as the scarab beetle, sphinxes, pharaohs, and hieroglyphics.
Austrian born, Carl Bacher was the son of Joseph Bacher, a well-known Viennese jeweler during the 1870s. Together, they produced incredible and award-winning works of jewelry in the Egyptian Revival style, which were featured in expositions worldwide. Their attention to detail includes impeccable use of gold and enamel, Etruscan and Castellani work and artistic designs that combine history with fashion and beauty.
This incredible pharaoh pin is an extraordinary example of Carl Bacher's work from the Victorian Egyptian Revival (ca1880) era! The pin, which is crafted in 14kt yellow gold, holds an intricately hand carved carnelian stone in the shape of a female pharaoh with outstretched arms and folded legs. The carved stone features wonderful details, including a stoic facial expression, muscular arms, and clenched hands and displays a rich, deep orange color with a light, translucent quality. Four gold bands wrap around her arms, appearing as if they attach to a feathered motif that hangs below her outstretched arms. The "feathers" are embellished with gorgeous white, green, and deep red enameled cells, which are separated by fine twisted rope wirework. The pharaoh's ornate headdress forms the shape of a bird whose feathered bodice adorns complimentary enameled cells and a line of accent diamonds trail down the side of its open wing, a wonderful sparkling detail. On the back of the piece is a secure bar pin clasp, making it easy to fasten the brooch to a favorite garment. Stamped on the back of the pin is "585" and the slightly faded Carl Bacher's hallmark, "JB." Two Austrian touchmarks are found on the bar pin, including one with a "W" indicating that it was assayed in Vienna and a "4" indicating its 14kt carat weight. This fantastic pin is a truly outstanding piece by Carl Bacher, showing exquisite detail and exemplary craftsmanship. It would be perfect for any Egyptian Revival collector, and would make a very impressive addition to any jewelry collection!
The pin measures approximately 1" tall, about 2" wide, and has a depth of approximately 1/8".

For centuries, Ancient Egypt has held the fascination of the public and continues to inspire artists and designers alike. With the discoveries of Egyptian tombs, and the treasures within, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the exotically opulent lives of the Pharaohs were beyond anyone’s imagination. Of all the precious objects unearthed in the tombs, the lavish jewels were perhaps the most fascinating for their extravagance and never-before-seen symbolism. The Roaring Twenties and the period’s Art Deco jewelry embraced the vivid contrasting colors, motifs, and symbols more daringly than ever before. Whether the jewels were complete, faithful reproductions or real artifacts preciously decorated in similar style, the Egyptian Revival jewelry during the Art Deco era is the most lavish and magnificent.
The brooch is 3 5/8 inches (9.2cm) wide and is 1 inch (26mm) tall.
The brooch is hallmarked on the back with 800 for 800 Silver which was the silver standard for most Continental jewelry...
