Castellani 42.06ct Black Opal Venus Hand Carved Intaglio 18kt Gold Brooch

About the Item

Castellani® commissioned to have this distinctive 42.06ct Natural Black Opal hand carved into an intaglio. The subject is “Venus Rising Out of the Sea”,the same scene that the famous artist Botticelli painted in circa 1485. The intaglio is very detailed from Venus’ flowing hair to the sea’s waves crashing over the sea shell. The deep purple iridescence of the opal is pronounced in the daylight. The GIA Gemological Identification Report states that the color is Natural and there are No indications of treatment. The shape is an Oval intaglio. The measurement of the opal is 34.99x25.36x8.28mm. The master carver has signed the intaglio “Castellani” on the reverse side of the carving. The Apollo setting is a signature design of Castellani®, using our tong prongs. In the circa 1860’s Castellani used this design for Ancient coins and intaglios. The brooch’s measurements 36mm Length 28mm Widest Width 8.4mm Depth (1.4” Length 1” Width 1/3” Height). As a custom addition, a bale can be added to be worn as a pendant. The Castellani and Double C logo plates are affixed to the back the the brooch. Castellani’s Jewellery from the 19th Century is in museums: British Museum; Victoria & Albert Museum; Metropolitan Museum of Art; The Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt Museum to name a few); exhibitions as well as in private collections. Fortunato Pio Castellani can be called the "Father of Archeological Revival Jewellery". In the mid 1800's in Rome, Castellani had the entree to visit the Ancient Etruscan ruins. He was able to study these Ancient designs as well as other Ancient Mediterranean civilizations’ jewellery and started to create and re-design under his brand.
