Castellani 19th Century Shakudo 18kt Gold Brooch

About the Item

Shakudo were from Samurai’s ceremonial swords and sheaths. The last time these unique and works of art were used in the Japanese Samurai culture was in the late 1800’s, when the Samurais were disbanded. In this Castellani® Apollo brooch, the 19th Century disc shape Shakudo’s whimsical scene is a female demon with a fish on her dead and a male demon playing an instrument with a duck and 2 flowers on his head. The frame is 35mm in diameter and 5mm depth/height ( 1 5/16” Diameter and 1/8” Depth/ Height. The signature Apollo frame with tong prongs is made with our Ancient Terra-Cotta Red™ 18kt gold. Shakudo is a mixed metal work of art. The mixed metals are gold, copper and silver. This whimsical disc has been polished and is very bright and shiny, the copper can be seen on the back. The Castellani and Double C Logo Plates are affixed to the back of the brooch. The weight of the brooch is 16.2 grams. This brooch can be converted into a pendant adding able at an additional cost. Castellani’s Jewellery from the 19th Century is in museums: British Museum; Victoria & Albert Museum; Metropolitan Museum of Art; The Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt Museum to name a few); exhibitions as well as in private collections. Fortunato Pio Castellani can be called the "Father of Archeological Revival Jewellery". In the mid 1800's in Rome, Castellani had the entree to visit the Ancient Etruscan ruins. He was able to study these Ancient designs as well as other Ancient Mediterranean civilizations’ jewellery and started to create and re-design under his brand.
