Castellani 19th Century Shakudo 15kt Gold Brooch

About the Item

Shakudo were from Samurai’s ceremonial swords and sheaths. The last time these unique and works of art were used in the Japanese Samurai culture was in the late 1800’s, when the Samurais were disbanded. This Castellani® brooch is decorated by 2.3mm gold beads and fine gold braiding around the frame. The 19th Century oval shape Shakudo is copper with lattice design. The frame is 2” length and 1.50” width ( 5.5cm length and 35mm width 6.5mm depth. Shakudo is a mixed metal work of art. The mixed metals are gold, copper and silver. This brooch can be used as a pendant adding a bale at an extra charge.The pin has a clasp with a lever to lock into place. The Castellani and Double C Logo Plates are affixed to the back of the brooch. The weight of the brooch is 20.8grams. Castellani’s Jewellery from the 19th Century is in museums: British Museum; Victoria & Albert Museum; Metropolitan Museum of Art; The Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt Museum to name a few); exhibitions as well as in private collections. Fortunato Pio Castellani can be called the "Father of Archeological Revival Jewellery". In the mid 1800's in Rome, Castellani had the entree to visit the Ancient Etruscan ruins. He was able to study these Ancient designs as well as other Ancient Mediterranean civilizations’ jewellery and started to create and re-design under his brand.
