Castellani Ancient Silver Alexander the Great Coin 18kt Gold Brooch
About the Item
Alexander the Great, was only twenty years old when he became king of Macedonia in 336 B.C, was perhaps the greatest general of all time. He was certainly a great empire builder. In the course of just thirteen years before his death at Babylon in 323 B.C, he changed the Mediterranean and Near Eastern world forever by bringing the territory of the Persian Empire under Greek rule.
The Alexander the Great silver coin is dated 330 BCE set into our signature brooch setting, the Apollo. Castellani in the 1800’s used this setting and design for Ancient coins, cameos and intaglios. The tong prongs are used in this setting hold the coin in it’s place. The gold is our Ancient Terra-Cotta Red™ 18kt giving a nice contrast of color from the frame and silver of the coin. The coin is 35mm and not completely round. The frame measures 35mm in diameter and 4mm depth/height (1.37 inches diameter 1/8” depth/height).The weight of the brooch is 21.7 grams. This brooch can be converted into a pendant for an additional charge. The Castellani and Double C Logo plates are affixed to the back of the brooch.

British Museum; Victoria & Albert Museum; Metropolitan Museum of Art; The Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt Museum to name a few); exhibitions as well as in private collections.
