Ed Wiener Gold and Gems Brooch/ Pendant
About the Item
This exceptional piece by Ed Wiener was most likely custom made. Wiener was one of the most well known of the Greenwich Village designers of the mid 20th century. Much of his work was done in silver but later in his career he had the means to use gold as well. Wiener worked in Greenwich Village and Provincetown beginning in the 1940's when he was influenced by the abstract expressionist movement. He died in 1991 at the age of 73 and was continuing to work in his Madison Avenue gallery at the time of his death.
This unique piece is both a brooch and a pendant. It is 3 inches in diameter, made of 18 karat gold with a central amethyst and eight smaller oval and square stones of: pink and green tourmaline; citrine and amethyst. The stones all have collar bezels with granulation. The body of the pendant has a wonderful abstract surface. The piece weighs a hefty 76 grams which is nearly 5 ounces of 18 karat gold.
