About the Item

A spectacular diamond starburst from the Edwardian (ca1900) era! This magnificent piece is made of sterling-topped 14kt gold and has a convertible design that can be worn in three beautiful ways: as a pin, a pendant, or a hair comb. The dazzling diamond-encrusted surface is comprised of old mine cut and rose cut diamonds, which are bead and belcher set in platinum. The largest center stone weighs approximately .70ct and has H range color and SI1 range clarity. There are 6 rays that emerge from a diamond cluster at the center, and 6 diamond posts that alternate with each ray. A total of 24 old mine cut diamonds and 12 rose cut diamond accents have an approximate carat weight of 1.30ctw combined. The total carat weight of the entire piece is approximately 2.00ctw for all 37 diamonds combined. The versatility of the design is a rare and unique feature! On the back of the piece is a removable screw-in pin clasp, allowing the starburst to be fastened to a favorite garment as a brooch. A hidden hook bail rests on the back of one of the starburst's rays, allowing it to hang as a pendant from a chain. Accompanying the starburst is a hair comb carved from natural tortoise shell. When the pin stem is removed from the back of the starburst, it can be attached to the gold posts on the hair comb and tucked into an elegant up-do. The starburst comes in the original velvet and satin antique box, which has a removable pad that reveals a hidden compartment for the hair comb inside. An outstanding example of antique starburst motif jewelry, this breathtaking piece is perfect for special occasions! The starburst has a 1 1/4" diameter and is slightly concave in shape, measuring approximately 3/8" at the deepest point. The tortoise shell comb measures 2 3/4" long and is 5/8" wide. When the starburst is attached, the entire length of the hair comb measures 4" long. The total pennyweight of the piece is 7.4 dwt.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the setting, and the diamonds are intact. The pin clasp, bail and removable hair pin/comb are secure and in good working condition.
