About the Item
Indulge in a rare Belle Epoque to Art Deco Egyptian Revival masterpiece of a reclining Sphinx in Sterling Silver. The stunning brooch has the head of a Pharoah with the body of the front of lion and the back of a magnificent winged sea serpent. The magnificent jewel reflects the work of a master artisan. The extraordinary Sphinx with the Pharoah wearing the magnificent headdress, the wonderful paws of the lion and the absolutely stunning winged serpent tail. The brooch pin is Sterling Silver and dates to the Belle Epoque to the Art Deco period, circa 1870-1920. The brooch could be easily converted to a pendant necklace if desired. The quality of this piece is extraordinary. And the imagery of ancient Egypt is stunning. The museum quality jewel is a treasure to wear and to be passed on for generations.
For centuries, Ancient Egypt has held the fascination of the public and continues to inspire artists and designers alike. With the discoveries of Egyptian tombs, and the treasures within, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the exotically opulent lives of the Pharaohs were beyond anyone’s imagination. Of all the precious objects unearthed in the tombs, the lavish jewels were perhaps the most fascinating for their extravagance and never-before-seen symbolism. The Roaring Twenties and the period’s Art Deco jewelry embraced the vivid contrasting colors, motifs, and symbols more daringly than ever before. Whether the jewels were complete, faithful reproductions or real artifacts preciously decorated in similar style, the Egyptian Revival jewelry during the Art Deco era is the most lavish and magnificent.
The brooch is 2 5/8 inches (6.7cm) wide and is 1 1/4 inches (3cm) tall.
The brooch is hallmarked Sterling.
