About the Item

To emulate nature in its beauty, its wealth of colours and shapes: goldsmiths have been pursuing this lofty goal for centuries. On each era characterised by graphic shapes and simplicity, there followed one that valued the softer, richer lines of nature, and its jewel-toned colours. Just one glimpse at this brooch tells us that it was made at such a time. It dates to the years around 1830, the era known as „Biedermeier“ in Germany, correlating to the late years of the Georgian era within the British Empire. The jewellery of the time glows and blooms in vivid hues: precious coloured gemstones, glossy enamels and warm yellow gold were the favoured materials of the era. The brooch at hand is made of rubies and emeralds that simulate a rose's petals and leaves. The large, three-dimensional head of the flower is lavishly set with rubies, catching the light with every movement of its wearer. Likewise, emeralds cover the entire surface of the leaves and stem, on which a smaller, not yet opened rosebud sits. Typically of the time, the gemstones are set in settings of silver, in order not to falsify the colours: white gold and platinum would not be used until the early 20th century. The back of the brooch, however, is made of gold, thus allowing for carefree wear without fear of staining skin or clothes. The brooch is in wonderful condition. Sometime after 1893 and before 1984, it was imported to France, as its hallmarks show. MATERIALS 205 natural rubies, approx. 14,00 ct altogether, max. 5,7 x 4,3 mm / 0,22 x 0,17 in 100 natural emeralds, approx. 7,50 ct, max. 3,2 x 3,5 mm / 0,13 x 0,14 in Gold 750/000, resp. 18 Karat Silver, minimum fineness 800/000 DIMENSIONS 4,2 x 10,8 cm / 1,65 x 4,25 in HALLMARKS Owl and swan, French import marks for gold with a minimum fineness of 750/000 and silver with a minimum fineness of 800/000, in use 1893-1984 CERTIFICATE Delivery with detailed independent certificate of the DEGEB (Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Edelsteinbewertung/German Association for Gemstone Evaluation) in Idar-Oberstein dated 07.10.2016. The outer petals of the rose may move slightly due to the manner of construction, but are at no risk of coming off. The safety clasp of the pin has been renewed in recent times.
